Ahead of last week’s October 4th hardware event, Google uploaded the “Pixel Ambient Services” app responsible for the Pixel 2’s music recognition feature. Today, the battery app found on Pixel and Nexus devices has been similarly added to the Play Store for easier updates.
The app’s description in the Play Store points out that Device Health Services predicts how long your phone’s battery will last based on your usage. The only feature listed is “Personalized battery usage estimates”. After updating, you probably won’t notice much of anything. It looks like all of the updates are under the hood with no visual changes at all.
The application is not available worldwide. We know it can be downloaded in the United States, so if you try to access the Google Play Store page from another country and get an error, then it's likely that the app is now available in your region.
Over time, Google has moved to putting more under-the-hood aspects of Android on the Play Store for more timely updates, rather than needing a full system update. Another recent example is the Carrier Services app.
